I must admit something to you: prior to meeting/starting to date Robert, I had never attended a lectureship. That’s right: in the 20 years that I’d been alive, I’d never attended any sort of lectureship. Why? Well, I didn’t really know about any, and also, I thought they were all for preachers. The closest I’d come to ‘attending’ a lectureship was my freshman year at Freed-Hardeman, and technically, the lectureship came to me, so I didn’t really avail myself to it that much.
Now, though, lectureships are a routine thing in my life. You may be thinking, ‘well of course, because your husband is a preacher’. And ok, maybe that’s one of the reasons we get to go to some of them, because he’s invited to speak or lead singing. However, I feel that I should clue you in a little bit, as a lectureship outsider myself, as to what these things actually consist of.
1: Lectureships are about learning.
Do you love the Bible? Do you love betting yourself? Do you love exploring the text and gleaning new, and deeper, understanding for what God’s word has to say? Then go to a lectureship! Might I recommend Polishing the Pulpit. It has a track for every single person in your family, so please avail yourself to this absolute spiritual feast! Just today, I returned from a two-day stint at the Memphis School of Preaching lectureship, and it was FULL of wonderful lessons! Getting to sit at the feet of capable servants such as Dan Winkler, Tom Holland, Cliff Goodwin, TLN‘s Brad McNutt– it is definitely time well spent! And you cannot come away the same! You will learn SO much (and consequently, your Bible will be FULL of notes!) Please, please don’t think that lectureships are only for preachers and their families. If you want to grow spiritually, you need to go to a lectureship. So, may I please personally invite you to East Hill’s lectureship, which starts May 15th and goes through the 19th. Amazing speakers such as BJ Clarke, Torrey Clark, and others will be joining us, and you don’t want to miss out!
2: Lectureships are about camaraderie.
Do you love spending time with like-minded people? Do you love spending time with Christ-minded people? Do you love spending time with the best people this earth has to offer? Then lectureships are for you! Truly it is a joy and a blessing to be around God’s children, especially when those people have become near and dear to your heart. I spent the past couple of days with some of the most amazing people on earth, and it absolutely lifted my spirits. If you ever find yourself in a funk, feeling alone in your Christianity, or even feeling let down by Christians, attend a lectureship. It will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged; excited to be a member of Christ’s body, but also excited to be around those with like, precious faith! I will forever cherish the moments I spent with Torrey & Alexandra Clark, Chris & Melissa Clevenger, Brad McNutt, BJ Clarke, and others this week. Being around Christian friends just puts a smile on your face, and what better place to do that than a lectureship–where large crowds of God’s people are gathered for a common purpose!
3: Lectureships are about God. The entire point of attending a lectureship is to better your relationship with your Maker. Do you want a deeper relationship with Him? Do you want to understand more about what He wills for your life? Then attend a lectureship! You will come away more in love with your Father in heaven! Each and every lesson has been specially geared toward helping Christians grow, and each lesson will do just that. If you want your faith to grow and your dedication to deepen, GO TO A LECTURESHIP!!
