If you aren’t familiar with Bible Marking, there is a post you should read first by our friends at Come Fill Your Cup. I first learned this technique from one of my favorite speakers and writers, Kathy Pollard, and I am forever indebted for her taking the time to teach such an important topic. I know that many of my friends are fellow Bible markers, and so I wanted to share this chain of Scriptures with any who may be interested.
Sunday evening, my husband presented a powerful sermon about lying, and I asked him if I could take his scriptures and turn them into a Bible marking topic. He gladly agreed, and so here are the list of scriptures if you’re so inclined. Otherwise, what a powerful study to simply meditate on these powerful words from our God.
Lying (L) – a Bible-marking topic
John 8:44
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
Lying is not from God. Satan is the father of lies.
Genesis 3:4
“Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.”
Sin entered our world through lies Satan told. It is no wonder that God calls lying an abomination.
Titus 1:2
“in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,”
God cannot lie. If some lies aren’t bad, why can’t God lie ever??
Hebrews 6:18
“that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.”
Psalm 33:4
“For the word of the Lord is right, And all His work is done in truth.”
If we are lying, we are not doing the Lord’s work.
Psalm 31:5
“Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.”
God is the God of truth. To be associated with Him, we must be of the truth, too.
Proverbs 6:16-19
“These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
God absolutely opposes lying. It is an abomination before Him and His supreme holiness.
Proverbs 12:22
“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal truthfully are His delight.”
God delights in those who do things truthfully, without deception.
Proverbs 19:5
“A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies will not escape.”
It is impossible to lie and not have that sin held to your charge.
Proverbs 30:6-8
“Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. Two things I request of You(Deprive me not before I die): Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches—Feed me with the food allotted to me;”
Adding to the word of God makes you a liar. Adding to any truth makes you a liar.
Colossians 3:9
“Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds”
Lying is diametrically opposed to Christianity. Lying means your old man is not dead.
Ephesians 4:25
“Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.”
Followers of Jesus are to put lying completely away.
1 John 1:6
“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
When we live hypocritically, we are lying. Walking in darkness and claiming a relationship with God is a lie.
1 John 2:4
“He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
If we claim a relationship with God but do not do the things He commands, we are liars.
1 John 4:20
“If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?”
If we claim a relationship with God but hate/despise/mistreat our brothers and sisters, we are liars.
Revelation 21:8
“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
All liars must go to hell.
Revelation 21:27
“But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
No liars will be admitted into heaven.
Revelation 22:15
“But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.”
No lie is worth the punishment liars must receive.
1 Timothy 1:10
“for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine”
Lying is contrary to sound doctrine, which is why it must be punished by a just God, and why it must be put off by a disciple of Jesus who is striving to be holy as He is holy.
