Have you not known?

Isaiah 40 is a fascinating chapter, speaking to the scientific foreknowledge of our God. On top of that, though, it gives a beautiful picture of our Almighty that sometimes I forget.

Starting in verse 21, Isaiah writes,

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in…..“To whom then will you liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number, He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power; Not one is missing.

Here, we see that God is in control. He sits above the circle of the earth, looking down on all the things He created, and He sees them all. He calls them by name, and nothing is hidden from His sight. And after such a majestic display, we see what God’s people have to say.

“Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: “My way is hidden from the Lord, And my just claim is passed over by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.”

This is us, isn’t it? At the very least, this is definitely me. I see the omnipotent characteristics of my God every day. I see His handiwork displayed in the beautiful sunsets, cooling breezes, and gorgeous scenery. I sing the songs that say I trust and obey, and yet, when the slightest disturbance steps in my way, I crumble. I forget about the God who sits above the earth I inhabit. I forget that the God who created me has it under control. I forget, because I’m too focused on myself.

When problems arise in my day to day life – stressors and complications and hurdles – I try to conquer them. I think, “I can do all things through Christ” right?! And when I’ve gone too far on my own way, when I’ve let myself become stressed or worried about the outcome, I have to wonder if Isaiah is asking me, have you not known?! How can you not see Who is right in front of you?!

The same God who created the heavens and earth loves you and listens to you and protects you. The same God who has the power to create all things has the power to give you what you need. He doesn’t get tired. He doesn’t grow weary of helping. He understands you more than you understand you, and He wants to help.

Sometimes, I need reminding. Yes, I need reminders about a lot of things – about topics I might neglect or sins I might let creep in. But sometimes, I just need a reminder of who the God I serve IS. And He is all in all. He is all powerful, the everlasting God, the Creator of both me and everything I see. So He’s got this! – whatever this may be. He can handle the freak outs, because He holds the entire world in His hands. And if, by chance, the thing you didn’t want to happen does happen – He’s still got you. He’s God, and He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above anything you even think you need.

Don’t stress. Don’t worry. Don’t freak out.
